York Hall Renovations

-
Built in 1954, the York County Circuit Courthouse is the fifth building to serve on this site as the continuous seat of Town and County Government since 1691.
-
After Court, County records and Sheriff functions were moved to other facilities in 1997, the County undertook the task of creating a multi-use facility that would continue as a county seat of government while providing a venue for community activities and cultural events for residents and tourists in historic Yorktown.
- Designed major renovations to the building interior, including structural, to create a Board of Supervisor's Meeting Room seating 114 people (with support functions), a County Work Session Room seating 49, a Public Reception and Lobby Space, a new elevator (within existing construction), public restrooms, gift shop space, as well as community-related office, a workroom, and exhibit space.
-
The building required a new water source geothermal HVAC system, electrical systems, computer and audio-visual systems, fire alarm, security, and fire suppression, and upgrading to conform with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
-
All of these systems were delicately designed and detailed to remain invisible or nest comfortably into this colonial detailed structure, retaining its 18th century character and finishes.
-
The 2,000 square foot Board Meeting Room was specifically designed to retain its historic character, while being subtly modified for modern television broadcast production capability.
-
The room was acoustically controlled by use of absorptive wall and ceiling finishes, and stage lighting, increased ventilation, and sound systems were accommodated by use of an acoustic-plaster "cloud" suspended below the existing tray ceiling. Broadcast capability extends from the A/V Control Room to the Board Meeting Room (and its rear-screen projector), the Work Session Room, and the Community exhibit space for possible public event broadcasts.
- The York Hall Renovation was awarded 2002 “Best Renovation” by the Hampton Roads Association for Commercial Real Estate.
